Forex Market Hours
Forex Market Hours: When to Trade?
One of the biggest advantages of the Forex market is that it is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. Unlike the stock market, which closes in the afternoon, the forex market moves around the globe as the sun rises in different financial hubs.
However, just because the market is open doesn't mean you should be trading. Liquidity and volatility vary significantly throughout the day.
The Four Major Trading Sessions
The forex day is divided into four major sessions:
| Session | Financial Hub | Approx. Time (GMT) | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | Australia | 10:00 PM - 7:00 AM | Markets open here. Generally lower volatility. |
| Tokyo | Asia | 12:00 AM - 9:00 AM | Focus on JPY pairs. Moderate volatility. |
| London | Europe | 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM | Highest Volume. Major trends often start here. |
| New York | North America | 1:00 PM - 10:00 PM | High volatility, especially during overlap with London. |
Note: Times can vary due to Daylight Savings Time.
The Session Overlaps: The "Golden Hours"
The best time to trade is usually when two major sessions overlap. This is when the maximum number of traders are active, creating high liquidity and strong price movements.
1. London - New York Overlap (1:00 PM - 5:00 PM GMT)
- The busiest time of the day.
- Traders from the two largest financial centers are active.
- Expect big moves in majors like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/CAD.
- Best for: Day traders, Scalpers, Breakout traders.
2. Tokyo - London Overlap (8:00 AM - 9:00 AM GMT)
- Brief overlap as Asia closes and Europe opens.
- Can see volatility in EUR/JPY and GBP/JPY.
3. Sydney - Tokyo Overlap (12:00 AM - 7:00 AM GMT)
- Generally quieter than the Western sessions.
- Good for trading AUD/JPY or NZD/JPY.
The Best Times to Trade
- For Volatility: Trade the London session or the London/New York Overlap. This is where you find the biggest pips.
- For Ranges: The Sydney/Tokyo session is often rangier and slower, which can be good for range-trading strategies, though spreads might be slightly higher.
The Worst Times to Trade
- Late New York Session (after 5:00 PM GMT): Liquidity dries up as US traders go home and Asian markets haven't fully opened. Price action is often choppy.
- Fridays (Late): Markets can be unpredictable as traders close positions for the weekend.
- Holidays: If banks in the US or UK are closed (e.g., Christmas, July 4th), liquidity will be extremely thin.
Determining Your Schedule
You don't need to stay awake 24 hours. Pick the session that fits your lifestyle:
- Live in Europe? The London session is your work day.
- Live in Asia? You can catch the end of New York (morning) or trade the Tokyo session.
- Live in the US? The Morning (NY open) is ideal.
Understanding market hours helps you avoid trading when the market is "sleeping" and focus your energy when the opportunities are real.
